After not posting for a while, I’m back! I know, I say that a lot. So, recently I went back and read one of my posts, and I realized how much I repeat the same thing OVER and OVER again in the same post. Man, I must be putting all of you through hell. Anyway, I suppose I don’t need to consistently put out 600+ word posts so I’ll TRY to refrain from repeating myself.
Anyway, on to the topic at hand. Now, I’m sure many people have already said this or have written a post about this, but regardless, I want to write about it. A few nights ago I was thinking about youtube and fanboys/fangirls. Why? Because earlier that night, my friend sent me a link to a Wonder Girls video. My friend and I are kinda Wonder Girls fanboys (we went to their concert and screamed the fanboy scream – which oddly enough sounds like a girl’s screaming in excitement…). Anyways, so I came to the realization that youtube has made it ridiculously easier to be a fanboy/fangirl. How so?
Hi, my name is Hirou and I have seen EVERY SINGLE WONDER GIRLS’ PERFORMANCE EVER. AND I DON”T LIVE IN KOREA. See what I’m saying? Youtube and its users has made it easier for anyone and everyone to watch videos, shows, clips or whatever of their choosing. That m-flo concert at Yokohama Arena? Done. That Clannad (TV) ending? Done. You want subs with that? Done. That Korean show? Done. Wanna learn that “Tell Me” dance? Youtube it. Fact is, youtube is every fanboy/fangirl’s heaven. It is only limited by what videos are taken down by the companies and networks.
However, youtube is also a heaven for racists, bigots, ignorant people, idiots, gangsters (oh, I’m sorry… I mean ‘gangsta’), arrogant people, a-holes, etc. As seen by the comments left by them. That’s not to say that ALL the people there are any of the above mentioned. There are intelligent people, helpful people, nice people, etc. Of course, the intarwebs (internet for you none internet nerds) is full of people like the above mentioned. Forums *cough gamefaqs COUGH* is a clear example of this.
Youtube isn’t only limited to that though. People can use youtube to get companies to listen to us, the customers. That laptop you JUST got replaced doesn’t work again? Dell wants to make you pay AGAIN to replace it? Go on youtube, post a video of you doing some drastic, and hopefully Dell will find you and replace that laptop.
Wanna be a star? Youtube is FULL of those people. You wanna be a singer? Write songs, sing them and shoot a video of you doing it. Wanna be a host on a TV show or perhaps get your very own TV show? Get on youtube. Perez Hilton did it. Wanna be an actor? Uhhh… I’m kinda lost on this one. Go post a video of your own productions? Maybe? Anyway, youtube is basically a free audition. You just have to try. And consistently put out videos. After all, the community is there to judge your performance. And if they like it, you know you got something good.
In the end, youtube has established its role as a tool for fanboys and fangirls to use to find pretty much anything they can think of, limited only by the users, the companies, and the networks. But not only that, it creates an opportunity for hopeful stars to get on their computers and post a video of themselves doing whatever it is they hope to become. Just keep in mind, it’s a gathering place for… well… you know. You know a site is big when it has its own verb. Don’t believe me? Google it.
